A well-written job description is one of the most effective recruitment tools a security employer can have. Before a candidate submits an application or attends an interview, the job advert creates the first impression of both the role and the company. If it lacks important details or is too generic, employers often receive unsuitable applications, spend more time answering basic questions, and struggle to find candidates who genuinely fit the position.

In Ireland’s security industry, every role has different requirements. A corporate front-of-house security officer needs different skills than someone working in retail security, mobile patrols, static guarding, or event security. Clearly describing the role helps candidates decide whether they are suitable before they apply, resulting in stronger applications and a more efficient recruitment process.

Clearly Define the Role and Responsibilities

Before writing the advert, employers should identify exactly what the position involves. Consider the type of site, shift pattern, working hours, required PSA licence, customer interaction, reporting responsibilities, and whether the officer will work independently or as part of a team.

Rather than using vague phrases such as “general security duties,” explain the day-to-day responsibilities. Candidates should understand whether the role involves access control, visitor management, patrols, CCTV monitoring, incident reporting, customer service, or emergency response. The more specific the description, the easier it becomes to attract applicants with the right experience and expectations.

Include the Information Candidates Want to Know

Strong job descriptions answer the questions candidates are most likely to ask before applying. Include the location, working hours, contract type, salary or hourly rate where possible, licence requirements, and any opportunities for training or career progression. Being transparent helps build trust and reduces applications from candidates who are not suitable for the position.

Employers should also describe the type of environment, whether it is a corporate office, residential development, retail store, industrial site, or event venue. This allows applicants to better understand the working conditions and decide if the role matches their experience and career goals.

Better Job Adverts Lead to Better Recruitment

A clear, honest, and detailed job description benefits both employers and candidates. It reduces unsuitable applications, improves the quality of interviews, and helps employers identify professionals who are more likely to succeed in the role. By investing time in creating accurate job adverts, security companies can strengthen their recruitment process, improve staff retention, and build teams that meet both client expectations and industry standards.
