Get your PSA licence

Most security roles in Ireland legally require a Private Security Authority (PSA) licence. You get one by completing a short PSA-approved course (QQI Level 4 — e.g. Guarding Skills or Door Security), passing Garda vetting, and applying to the PSA. Get it funded

If you’re with Intreo / the Department of Social Protection, ask your Job Coach about the Training Support Grant (TSG). It can fund short certified courses like PSA training — up to €1,000 a year, paid straight to the training provider. Your coach applies for you.

What’s a PSA licence?

The Private Security Authority (PSA) is the State body that regulates Ireland’s security industry. By law, you must hold a valid PSA licence to work in most security roles.
To get one, you complete an approved QQI Level 4 training course for your role — for example, Guarding Skills (4N1118) for static guarding, or a Door Security award for door supervisors.
Garda vetting is part of the process, and you apply to the PSA after your training. Start to finish typically takes a few weeks.

Funding your training with the TSG

The Training Support Grant is a Department of Social Protection scheme that helps jobseekers cover short, certified courses needed to take up a job — including PSA security training.

  • Applied for through your Employment Personal Adviser or Job Coach — not directly by you.
  • Up to €1,000 per year toward approved training.
  • Paid directly to the training provider once you complete the course.
