The ERO — Your Legal Pay Floor

Security workers in Ireland are protected by an Employment Regulation Order (ERO) set by the Security Industry Joint Labour Committee and enforced by the Workplace Relations Commission. This sets the absolute minimum rates any employer must pay — and it was updated in July 2025.

The ERO applies to anyone employed as a security operative by a security firm. If you are being paid below these rates, your employer is breaking the law.

Adult Minimum Rate
€15.41
Per hour — effective 22 July 2025
Night Shift Premium
€20
Per shift — in effect from 1 Jan 2026
Minimum Shift Pay
4 hrs

Employers must provide rosters at least 3 days in advance
Context: The ERO minimum rose from €12.90 to €14.50 in July 2024, then again to €15.41 in July 2025 — a 19% increase in 12 months. This reflects ongoing professionalisation of the sector and pressure from SIPTU on behalf of security workers. Most reputable employers pay above the ERO minimum, particularly in Dublin.

Premiums, Allowances & Extra Pay

Your base hourly rate is only part of the picture. Shift premiums and allowances can add meaningfully to your weekly take-home — particularly if you work nights, weekends, or bank holidays.

Night Shift Premium
€20 / shift
ERO minimum — in effect from 1 January 2026. Many employers pay more.
Minimum Shift Payment
4 hours
If called in for any shift, you are entitled to a minimum of 4 hours pay regardless of duration.
Bank Holiday Entitlement
Standard
Bank holiday entitlements apply under the Organisation of Working Time Act. Security workers qualify on a pro-rata basis.
Long Service Leave
+1 to +2 days
ERO provides one extra annual leave day after 5 years in the industry, two extra days after 10 years.
Uniform Allowance
Varies
Most employers provide uniform. Some provide a uniform allowance as part of contract. Confirm before accepting a role.
Data Centre Premiums
€18–€25/hr
Site-specific rates well above ERO minimum. Shift premiums on top. Highest-paid non-specialist sector.

Dublin vs Rest of Ireland — Does Location Affect Pay?

Yes — but less than you might expect. The ERO minimum applies nationally, so there is a common floor across all counties. Where Dublin stands apart is at the top end of the market.

Location Entry Rate Experienced Rate Top Sector Rate
Dublin €15.41 – €16.50 €17.00 – €20.00 €18.00 – €25.00 (data centres)
Cork €15.41 – €16.00 €16.00 – €18.00 €17.00 – €20.00
Galway €15.41 – €15.80 €16.00 – €17.50 €17.00 – €19.00
Limerick €15.41 – €15.80 €16.00 – €17.50 €17.00 – €19.00
Rest of Ireland €15.41 (ERO floor) €15.41 – €17.00 €17.00 – €18.00
The Dublin premium is real at the top end. Data centre roles in West Dublin and the Kildare corridor consistently advertise €18–€25/hr — rates you will rarely find outside the capital. If maximising earnings is a priority and you hold a valid PSA licence, Dublin is where to focus your job search.

Security Guard Salary Ireland — FAQ

What is the minimum wage for a security guard in Ireland in 2026?

The ERO minimum rate for adult security workers in Ireland is €15.41 per hour, effective from 22 July 2025. This is above the national minimum wage and is set specifically for the security industry by the Security Industry Joint Labour Committee. Night shift work also attracts a separate premium of €20 per shift from 1 January 2026.

What is the average security guard salary in Ireland?

Based on reported salaries across the Irish market in 2026, the typical full-time security guard earns between €37,000 and €44,000 per year — roughly €17 to €18 per hour before premiums and allowances. This average is pulled upward by higher-paid roles in data centres and specialist sectors.

Do door supervisors earn more than security guards in Ireland?

On a base hourly rate, door supervisors earn broadly similar rates to experienced static guards. The real advantage comes from shift premiums — Thursday to Saturday night shifts on pub and club doors attract additional payments on top of the hourly rate, which can make weekly earnings notably higher than a standard day shift guard.

Which security role pays the most in Ireland?

Data centre security officers consistently advertise the highest rates — €18 to €25 per hour — particularly across West Dublin and the Kildare corridor. Cash-in-transit operatives are also among the highest-paid at €17 to €22 per hour, reflecting the additional risk and responsibility of the role. Security management roles can exceed €30 per hour on a salary basis.

Can my employer pay me less than the ERO rate?

No. The ERO is a legally binding instrument enforced by the Workplace Relations Commission. Paying below the ERO minimum is unlawful. If you believe you are being underpaid, you can raise a complaint with the WRC at workplacerelations.ie. You do not need a solicitor to do this.

Does pay differ between Dublin and the rest of Ireland?

At entry level, the ERO minimum applies nationally so the floor is the same everywhere. The gap opens at the top end — Dublin's data centre and specialist security market consistently pays €3 to €10 per hour more than equivalent roles in regional cities. If maximising earnings is your priority, Dublin is where to focus.

How do I get a pay rise as a security guard in Ireland?

The most reliable routes are: moving into a higher-paid sector (data centres, CIT), adding a second PSA licence (particularly the Door Supervisor licence), taking on night shifts to earn the €20 per shift premium, or progressing to supervisory grade through the QQI Level 6 Security Management course. Switching employers is also often more effective than waiting for a pay review.
